St. Paul and Glendon win big at track & field zones

Teams prepare for provincials this week at U of A in Edmonton

St. Paul Regional and Glendon School will head to track and field provincials this weekend in Edmonton as zone champions in the 3A and 1A categories, after both schools finished well above the competition in overall points.

Despite the cold and rainy conditions at the zones track and field meet last Wednesday, each school had numerous top three finishes and both are expected to do well at the provincial meet on Friday and Saturday, which is being held at the University of Alberta.

“We’re excited about it; we have some strong kids who have the potential to medal,” said Regional track coach, Hank Smid, about this weekend’s meet. “It’s the best of the best.”

Smid said the school is expecting big results in the senior shot put, javelin, triple jump and junior long distance running categories. Regional’s Chanelle Gagne and Nicole Kitt were the only two athletes to break records in zones last week for their time in the girls’ 3,000m junior race.

For Glendon, track coach Daryn Galatiuk is looking to make it three provincial track & field banners in a row, something the school has never done before.

“There’s a little bit of anticipation for going next and seeing how well we can do,” Galatiuk said. “If we play our cards right, we can do well individually and as a team.

“It’s the most individual events we’ve ever gone to provincials with,” he added. “We have 12 kids, but out of those 12, we have about 22 individual events.”

First place winners for girls from the SPAA area included Megan Pelham (400m), Nicole Kitt (800m), Chanelle Gagne (1,500m, 3,000m), Paige Skrypichayko (shot put, discus throw, javelin), Hayley Smid (3,000m), Ashley Wozniak (800m), Lindsey MacDonald (80m hurdles), Monique Gervais (100m, 200m), Alanna Gagne (400m), Kyla Davies (long jump), Lasha Levesque (high jump), Kim Kwiatkowski (discus throw) and Sara Miller (javelin throw).

SPAA boys winners were Jared Dechaine (400m), Colten Zentner (100m hurdles), Austin Paton (shot put), Marcel Feland (100m hurdles), Fred Attfield (triple jump, high jump), Dallas Anderson (javelin throw), Donovan Fryingpan (400m), Dale Krankowsky (high jump), Marc Dubeau (shot put, discus throw) and Jonathan Shapka (javelin throw).

In the girls 4x100 relay event, Glendon’s Shayla Danyliuk, Megan Pelham, Emily Knapp and Paige Lundgren won the junior while St. Paul Regional’s Kyla Davies, Monique Gervais, Hailey Mahdiuk and Madi Novakowski took first in the senior.

On the boys side, Kyle Kwiatkowski, Colten Zentner, Morgan Lavallee and Jared Dechaine from Glendon took first in the junior race, with Regional’s Jerome Cote, Dale Krankowsky, Ben Quan and Jonathan Shapka finishing first in the senior event.

The girls 4x400 relay team from Regional comprised of Chanelle Gagne, Nicole Kitt, Hayley Smid and Monique Gervais also finished first.
