Joyride results in teenage girl's death

Jun 05, 2012 12:21 pm | Journal Staff

A joyriding excursion turned deadly in Saddle Lake on Monday morning, as a 14-year-old girl was killed when the truck rolled over.

A group of seven teenagers were joyriding in a white 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck early on the June 4 morning, according to an RCMP press release. The driver dropped two of the passengers at a residence, and while leaving, he allegedly accelerated in an aggressive fashion and lost control of the vehicle. The resulting collision caused the truck to roll over onto its roof, and partially ejected the front passenger. She was trapped under the truck and died instantly.

The rest of the occupants in the truck sustained minor injuries and fled the scene before RCMP, Saddle Lake Security and emergency crews responded to the crash.

Following investigation, a 17-year-old from Saddle Lake was identified as the driver of the vehicle and was arrested, according to the press release. He remains in police custody and is facing charges of impaired driving causing death and failing to comply with a recognizance. The suspect is currently bound by a recognizance after being released on a charge of second degree murder out of Edmonton.

RCMP stated the investigation into the collision is ongoing, but alcohol and speed are considered factors in the accident.
