A time to reflect

As we approach Christmas, a number of good news stories can be heard, of people donating to support good causes and events, whether it’s the Knights of Columbus and Santa’s Elves food hamper and toy drive or the St.

As we approach Christmas, a number of good news stories can be heard, of people donating to support good causes and events, whether it’s the Knights of Columbus and Santa’s Elves food hamper and toy drive or the St. Paul & Community Family Benefit Society.

This year has been a hard one for many, but people have done what the Knights of Columbus urge them to do, closing their eyes and opening their hearts – giving to people whom they don’t know to make sure their Christmases are a little brighter.

While we care for our neighbours here at home, we think of others in countries far from here, particularly the men, women and children caught in the horrific crossfires of war in Aleppo. While those trapped in the Syrian civilian war say the rest of the world has forgotten them, it’s not true – we remember, even while we feel powerless to stop a tide of conflict that has seen the Middle East region roiled in warfare over centuries.

Some Canadians join the Armed Forces to fight for peace, while others pursue politics in the hopes to effect change on a global scale. Others may donate to international relief efforts, hoping food and aid can reach people who desperately need both.

But this Christmas, all of us can hold our families closer and give thanks for the security of having a roof over our heads and being able to walk the streets in peace – and we can pray and hope for better for those who can’t take these simple things for granted. And we can continue, each of us, in the year ahead to do our small part in supporting good causes, both near and far, knowing as the plaque for St. Paul’s UFO landing pad says, that “if mankind travels this earth or universe armed with kindness, tolerance, hope and good spirits, we will always be welcome."
