It was an exciting weekend for the St. Paul Atom 1 Canadiens at their home tournament.

The boys played in four games, hosting teams from across the area, and in the end, taking top honours.

First up, the team took on Vermilion on Saturday morning, in a close battle that ended 5-4 in favour of the home team.

“Our team played very good, we just couldn’t put the puck in the net,” said coach Jamie Myshaniuk.

Then, the team took on the Cold Lake Atom 1 team. The game was a challenge for St. Paul, and the home team was defeated by a score of 16-3. It wasn’t the Canadiens’ best performance, admits Myshaniuk, but the team would have a chance to redeem themselves later in the weekend.

The young hockey players picked up the pace in game 3 against Kitscoty, early Sunday morning. It was an “exciting” game that would end in a score of 8-7 for St. Paul, and allowed the team to play in the final game later that day, again against Cold Lake.

With a clear goal in mind, St. Paul came out and “left it all on the ice,” according to Myshaniuk. And their efforts proved worthwhile, as St. Paul won the contest 5-4, scoring the game winner just as the third period was coming to a close.

St. Paul also hosted four-team tournament for a group of A and AA teams, with Edson and Sturgeon meeting up in the finals. Edson would win the contest by a score of 5-2.
