The beanbags were flying, and the tractors were once again rumbling at the third annual Cabrini Cup, held Saturday in Mallaig.

Thirty-six adult teams registered for the one-day bean bag tournament, along with a number of younger teams competing nearby. The competition was once again fierce, and cheers could be heard loud and clear when the perfect shot was mad, while a few groans were usually heard coming from the opposing team.

While hosting a bean bad tournament maybe have once seemed like a strange idea, the annual event has been a huge hit for the small community, bringing people together from one final gathering of the summer.

“It's popular because it's a great game for any age, and most people play for fun at home, or camping,” says Jaime Amyotte, one of the organizers of the beanbag tournament. “Putting some competitiveness always makes it better,” she adds.

Last year’s winners once again found themselves in the winner’s circle, with The Cornholios (Brett Baque and Kyle Smyl) nabbing the Stanley Cup type trophy for the second year in a row. Coming in second place in the adult category was team FML (Fred and Marcy Locke). The U15 division winning team was Wyatt Feland and Tristan Martin.

“It was a great turnout. The beautiful weather made the day great along with all the support of our sponsors . . . and volunteers,” says Amyotte.

Along with the beanbag tournament, a tractor and antique car show were once again held.

“We received a lot of positive feedback,” says Sylvie Lilje, one of the organizers of the tractor and car show portion. “We had a total of 70 cars, trucks and tractors,” which is five more than last year.

Once everyone had registered in the tractor and car show, the tractors started their engines and made their way through the hamlet, throwing candy at children lined along the streets, for the event’s annual parade. This year, organizers also decided to add bouncy houses and a kids’ area with face painting and tattoos to the outdoor event.

“The kids were occupied and we had babysitters on site all day,” says Amyotte. “Overall, it was an awesome family fun filled day in a great community.”

The event acts as a fundraiser for Mallaig Minor Hockey.
