Twenty-four people enjoyed a weekend of fine golf, good weather and hospitality, as St. Paul Golf Course hosted the club’s annual championship over Aug. 26 and 27.

“The weather was nice; the clubhouse really treated us good,” said Sean Quinn of Saddle Lake, after the championship had wound down and visitors checked out the goods at the pro-shop, taking home shirts as part of the prizes. Quinn noted it was a good time to play with his “buds from home,” fellow Saddle Lakers, James Steinhauer and Dennis Moosewah.

By the end of Sunday afternoon, Steinhauer would be crowned men’s club champion, out of the 15 men participating, with a 160 low gross score, while Quinn would get the low net score, at 139, and with Moosewah winning in the seniors’ category.

Seven junior golfers signed up to play, with Reid Fedoruk netting a 187 low gross score and Nick Tucker notching a 144 low net score.

Two women vied for ladies’ honours, with Anna Scheffelmiar winning the ladies’ club championship, with a 112 low gross score, finishing one stroke over Jody Lee.

The club’s pro shop manager Sean Collins noted it was his first year running the championship, so it was hard for him to compare this year with previous events, but said things seemed to run smoothly.

Next up for the course is the club’s Optimal Fitness Speed Golf challenge, on Sept. 9, which costs $20 to enter. Collins said he’d had experience with this event and seen it unfold in premiere Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, but to his knowledge, it’s not been held in Canada.

“You get a stroke for every stroke, and you get a stroke for each minute you’re on the course,” he said “As far as I know, they’ve never done it here before. It’s something new, so I figured I’d try it out.”
