The annual junior curling bonspiel took place on Jan. 28, highlighting another popular season of the sport in St. Paul.

Event organizer Crystal St. Arnault says there’s no lack of young curling fanatics in the area.

“We (had) 16 teams participating, 14 of them are from St. Paul and two from Mallaig.”

She added, “We have kids from eight years old until about 11 years of age in our program, we also (had) some Grade 6s that (participated). They curl in the junior high program, but they do come and participate with us.”

The junior curling league runs every Wednesday from November on, and St. Arnault says the end-of-year bonspiel is an opportunity for the curlers to show off the skills they’ve learned.

“This bonspiel is a chance for the players to show their family members and grandparents what they’ve learned all year,” she said.

The bonspiel was a point-based event, with the winners being the team that gathered the most points in each pool.
