No lazy days of summer

The other day when someone asked me what my plans were for summer, I decided to take a minute to flip through the calendar, and remind myself what my plans really were.

The other day when someone asked me what my plans were for summer, I decided to take a minute to flip through the calendar, and remind myself what my plans really were.

Although I certainly am the type of person that like to do things on a whim, juggling kids, and two jobs, makes for a necessary level of planning. So when I realized that over half my weekends were already spoken for this summer, it could have made me feel slightly overwhelmed, but instead I decided to feel grateful.

Last summer, we spent a lot of time planning and organizing ourselves around taking a big holiday. That in itself seemed to fill our summer, which resulted in an amazing experience for our little family.

But this summer, we are taking things down a notch, and sticking closer to home; although I imagine the experiences will be equally satisfying.

At least four of my weekends this summer will mostly be dedicated to work and photographing weddings. And while I’ve stepped back on the number of weddings I do take on over the course of a year, I’m entirely happy to be able to have these days to look forward to.

While it might sound crazy, I’m grateful that a good chunk of my schedule is taken up by work. I’m happy to be busy, and also very happy that my husband has decided to return to working in the school system over the past six months. This means that juggling work over the summer months got easier, as my husband will get to resume his stay-at-home dad duties for a couple months.

I also have a few weekends and days already dedicated to spending time with friends and family. While I’m happy to do things on a whim, it is nice to also schedule these things into my calendar, so that the summer doesn’t run away on us.

I’m grateful to have friends and family who want to schedule us in to their summer too, which makes things a bit of a juggling act, but one I’m happy to be party of.

As an adult, I’ve never really experienced the “lazy days of summer.” Going from being a student to working a full-time job, with kids soon after there really isn’t much to be lazy about. Even when we head out camping, I certainly don’t feel like our days are lazy.

But, once again, I don’t feel like that’s anything to be upset about. I’m grateful to not be lazy, to be able to run around with the kids, play ball in the evenings after working full days, and hopefully taking some time to make some new memories.
