Badminton is an extremely popular sport among young athletes in the area, and the 243 students that took part in the Junior High St. Paul Athletics Association this past Tuesday made that evident.

Robyn Randall was the junior high badminton commissioner this year, and she attributes the high number of competitors to a recent rule change.

“This year, our number of competitors was high because . . . teams were allowed to have to athletes compete in each category.”

Due to the high volume of players, the gymnasiums at École du Sommet, Racette Junior High, Glen Avon, and Regional High School all had to be used to accommodate the championship tournament.

Throughout the spring, the athletes from schools in and around St. Paul have been preparing to face-off against one another. SPAA is especially important for junior high athletes since it is the last event of the season, unlike senior high which gives the opportunity to attend zones, and then potentially provincials.

Racette was the big winner throughout the day, taking home all three of the SPAA banners for the Boys, Girls, and Mixed Competition.

Gilles Gervais, coach of the Racette badminton team, said that although the team did manage to dominate, it was not easy.

“We had 48 athletes competing, and we had a really good day. Our athletes worked very hard and it paid off on the court.”

Glen Avon also had a strong showing in the competition, medalling in eight of the categories, with Two Hills sitting close behind in third with six medals.

“There was a lot of strong competition, the other division schools have so many talented athletes, it made for some great badminton to watch,” said Gervais. Racette has had a great year overall in sports, winning the SPAA basketball championship in March and the SPAA volleyball championship in November.

Gervais gave kudos to the organizers and the athletes of the day as they contributed to its success.

“The organizers did such a great job, the day ran very smoothly due to their hard work. All our Racette athletes and the rest of the athletes were very sportsmanlike throughout the day which was great to see.”
