The St. Paul Regional High School celebrated its 17th annual sports awards night to recognize the best individual and team efforts from the 2015-16 school year.
An impressive 116 athletes competed as part of the Saints’ nation, which makes up 32 per cent of the student population, a notable number that certainly contributed to their very successful year.
Regional Athletic Director Hank Smid spoke fondly of the accomplishments of the school, noting the 15 total banners the school brought home. The athletes collected 10 SPAA banners and five Zones banners this year.
“We had a very successful year, we had many great individual performances from many athletes, and great team efforts, which both contributed to our success,” said Smid.
The coaches of each sports team which included cross-country, volleyball, basketball, curling, badminton, track and field, and golf.
Grade 11 student Courtney Hebert was chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year for her impressive performances in intermediate girls badminton singles, where she earned a bronze medal at provincials.
She also scored her second straight provincial gold medal in long jump during track and field, and she played on the volleyball team and was a part of the female golf team.
When asked about this impressive achievement, Courtney had humble words to offer.
“As an athlete, I’m always working to get better and compete to the best of my ability. This year I was lucky enough to accomplish some of my biggest goals as an athlete and those achievements alone continually remind me why I love participating in sports so much.”
She added, “Receiving athlete of the year is very exciting for me, but I what think I am most proud about is the individual and team accomplishments that my teammates and I have achieved throughout the year. It’s a great feeling knowing that all of the hard work you put in has allowed you to achieve your goals.”
Grade 10 student Brendan Levasseur was chosen as this year’s Male Athlete of the Year for his involvement in volleyball, track and field, badminton, golf and cross country.
“It’s quite an honour because I put a lot of effort in by playing so many sports. Putting in the time and effort it takes to become a dedicated athlete and team players,” said Levasseur. “Being in Grade 10, and seeing the other great athletes I was up against makes it a lot more special. Also I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what I did if it wasn’t for my coaches putting in the time and effort to make me the athlete I am.”
After a year of great sports achievement, Smid expresses gratitude for the hard work put in by all of the athletes.
“Being in the 3A category for all our Zones and Provincial sports makes our accomplishments even more special. In the 3A category, it includes schools that have 300 to 799 students. That put us near the bottom for numbers at 360 students. We have a lot to be proud of this year, and although we are losing so many great graduating athletes, we know that there will be another outstanding class of Grade 10s next year from Glen Avon and Racette.”
