Friends and family continue to honour the life of Dallas Steinhauer, with the third annual memorial golf tournament for Steinhauer taking place at the Vilna Golf Course on Saturday.

On Aug. 5, 2014, Steinhauer was involved in a fatal collision on Highway 28. This year, on Aug. 5, Steinhauer’s family held a feast at their home in his honour.

Sitting in the entrance of the Vilna Golf Course’s clubhouse on Saturday was a portrait of Steinhauer. His mom, Denise, is proud of the portrait that was done by one of her son’s classmates, and fondly appreciates the piece.

The Vilna Golf Course itself is a memory of Steinhauer, who began golfing at a young age and also played hockey in the community. For three straight years, over 100 golfers have taken part in the memorial event, which speaks to who Steinhauer was, and how he is missed.

A total of 53 teams took part in this year’s two-man scramble on Saturday. Thirty-six teams took part in the competitive side, and 17 in the non-competitive side. People from all over Alberta take part in the tournament, and the majority of participants had some sort of connection to Steinhauer, be it through golf, school, or family.

The solid tournament, according to Steinhauer’s cousin, Miranda Moosewah, speaks to the “fondness they had of Dallas. They also come out to support Bill and Denise,” she adds, as she sits near her aunt and uncle.

"My aunt and uncle have had the hard task of grieving for their son since he passed,” says Moosewah. "This golf tournament really helps in their healing, surrounded by his friends and family. Hearing different stories each year of how people came to first meeting Dallas brings smiles to their faces, because it reminds them of how positive and kind their son was both on and off the golf course."

The event is set to take place for four years, which means next year will be the last one. Organizers say the support they’ve had from sponsors, and the golf course itself, over the years has been great.

And after golfing a full day under clear skies and bright sunshine, the evening wrapped up with prizes and of course a group photo, offering one last cheers to a friend and family member who is clearly missed, but always remembered.
