Unofficial results released on Monday night had Maureen Miller winning every poll, as she defeated incumbent Glenn Andersen to claim the mayor’s chair, news she celebrated at home with friends and supporters.

An appetite for change saw the Town of St. Paul elect a brand-new mayor, as former school board chair Maureen Miller will lead a new group of councillors in the next four years.

Unofficial poll results had Miller leading in every polling station counted, with the final count giving her the win over incumbent Glenn Andersen, by a margin of 955 - 712.

“I worked hard - I've got lots on my plate,&” Miller said, noting she hopes the crew she will be working alongside has the needed energy to bring the town forward. “The number one thing I need to focus on is a cohesive council. We need to drive in one direction.&”

Miller will lead a council that will feature a mix of experience and first-timers, as past councillors Gary Ward and Ron Boisvert were elected, while incumbent Norm Noel held his chair. The three veterans will be joined by fresh faces as well, including Brad Eamon, Tyson DeMoissac and Nathan Taylor.

During campaigning, Miller said she heard a number of concerns from town residents that drove sweeping change. Without having served on town council, she noted it's hard to know how decisions were made, but the key issue is transparency and communication.

Miller felt that if the past council had been more open about its decision-making process, the community may have been more accepting of those decisions.

“They've achieved a lot, but I think they've lost the connection with the community.&”

She gave credit to the outgoing mayor, noting he's put in years in serving his community as a councillor and a mayor, for nearing two decades.

“He's put in a lot of work,&” she said of Andersen. “I've got big boots to fill.&”

Andersen said he wanted to congratulate Miller and the other councillors and wish them the best of luck as they commence on what is “not an easy job.&”

The past council had its issues, and the community spoke “loud and clear&” with its vote, said Andersen. But regardless of the outcome, he said he had been ready to look it as a win.

“I thought I made a difference in the community, a positive impact, and I'm happy with that,&” he said. “I'm not disappointed at all. I can say I worked hard at it -I can get back to my life.

With six of the seven people on the last council not returned to office, Noel said he felt people were not happy with some of the things they had seen, which they voiced with their vote. He felt he was able to hold on to his seat by staying in touch with the people, saying, "I think the key for me being re-elected was that the residents have seen that I truly have my heart in this community." He said he hopes to continue to serve the community's best interests in the next four years.

DeMoissac said he was “absolutely excited&” by the result, saying, “I think we have a good crew to work together and move forward.&”

His major priority is to “bring the morale back to town council and town employees,&” but on Monday night, there was only one thing for the new council to do - and that was celebrate.

“I'm ready to serve,&” said DeMoissac.

The plebiscite question in regards to photo radar also saw 960 people voting against having photo radar conducted in St. Paul, to 628 people opting to keep it.
