National Volunteer Week takes place from April 14-20, 2024
Truly, what is the significance of volunteering in your local community?
Not only is our modern world very hectic and fast-paced, but it’s also one that is rife with economic uncertainty and wealth inequality. It seems we’ve become so busy just trying to survive that the sense of community and helping others that has been part and parcel of almost all global societies since the dawn of time has been put on the back burner.
Throughout the week of April 14-20, Canadians who dedicate their time and talents through local nonprofits and other organizations will be recognized during National Volunteer Week.
As someone who has volunteered for several years both as a tutor teaching English to newcomers to Canada, along with helping with local SPCA and Humane Societies, I can tell you from firsthand experience that volunteering is more about merely donating an hour or two of your time.
It’s much more than that.
Without the time and efforts put in by volunteers, many community organizations would be forced to close their doors. Since money is tight these days, those who are willing to volunteer without getting paid are considered a genuine asset.
There are many benefits to actively helping in your community, including socializing with others, gaining new skills and experience, and feeling a sense of accomplishment knowing that the work you’re doing is making a difference.
Finding the time to devote to volunteering can be a challenge, but since helping others and making our communities better places to live is vitally important to society, it’s something all of us should strive to do.
