The old Spedden School is now just a pile of rubble, following a structure fire on April 14.

Smoky Lake County Fire Rescue Chief Scott Franchuk confirmed that the Vilna Fire Department responded to the structure fire in Spedden at 10:21 p.m. on Saturday night.

"When the fire department arrived on scene, the roof of the structure had already collapsed in on itself," he said. "A defensive attack operation was used to control the fire. Fire crews reminded on scene until 2:06 p.m., Sunday.

"The fire was deemed suspicious and is under investigation by the Smoky Lake RCMP and the Office of the Fire Commissioner," said Franchuk, via email with the Journal.

According to County of St. Paul Steve Upham, the school was closed to the public in the late 1970s. It then sat empty for over a decade before it was reopened as the Saddle Lake Christian School.

The building has been empty for a number of years, with its windows and doors boarded up.
