Sable has been given a new shot at life, thanks to the St. Paul Animal Shelter and its Paws of Gold fund. More funds are always needed to help injured animals.

With progress continuing to move forward on the construction of the new St. Paul Animal Shelter, which will be located west of St. Paul, the non-profit organizer has reinstated an account that used to collect funds to help stray animals in emergency situations.

The Paws of Gold fund was recently used when a young kitten, estimated to be about six or seven weeks old, was taken under the care of the animal shelter. The kitten was found by some people who noticed the kitten on a road.

"It was obvious that he would require some medical attention. St. Paul Veterinarian Clinic took the issue seriously and checked him out right away and informed us that he would require surgery," according to Josiah Clarke, manager of the shelter.

The kitten had surgery to wire its jaw and take out bone fragments, and re-attach his lip on Thursday morning in Bonnyville. Thankfully, surgery went well and the kitten is expected to make a full recovery.

"He is a determined little guy and likes to meow, even though he has a sore mouth."

Thankfully, the Bonnyville Veterinarian Clinic works with the shelter to keep costs to a minimum. The bill came in cheaper than anticipated, said Clarke, noting the shelter now has a $360 bill to pay. Although follow-up visits will also be required, adding to the costs.

Sable, as the kitten as been named, will be put up for adoption once he is healed and ready to move into a new home, said Clarke. "We are sure if he could talk that he would have an interesting story to tell and want to share a big kitty thank you to all those who stepped up to assist in his time of need."

The animal shelter took to social media to seek the public's help in raising funds to cover Sable's veterinarian bills, using the Paws of Gold account, also week. Over $200 had been raised by Thursday evening.

"Funds received in times like this are tracked by the shelter to ensure that they are used for the purpose in which the donor intended - for the care of animals that need extra attention or emergency services," says Clarke.

He also noted that the construction of the new animal shelter is progressing well. The rafters and walls are up, and utilities will be installed shortly.

The shelter is organizing a garage sale during Rock the Block on Aug. 16, with funds going directly to the shelter's building project. Anyone interested in donating items to the garage sale can do so by dropping them off at the shelter's office inside the Community Futures building on main street.
