The St. Paul Elks are hosting the 37th annual radio auction on Nov. 4, and they’re expecting it to be “a real social gathering” for the community, and of course a major fundraiser as in previous years, according to Elks President, Jim Turton.

“We do have an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. in the afternoon on Friday, and then on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They can pre-bid any one of those days,” said Turton.

The auction takes place on 97.7FM from 3 to 10 p.m. and will feature a number of familiar voices from the area, including Jason Quinney, Danny White, and Mike Parenteau, among others.

Turton said the Elks support quite a number of community groups and clubs with the money raised from the auction, including Scouts, dance clubs, archery, Cadets, the women’s shelter, and the hospital foundation, among others.

“They (the groups) do a letter up and then they come and present their reason for wanting the money,” said Turton. He said the Elks usually make a decision the same night as the presentation.

Linda Kryzanowski is a member of the Elks. She says the reason behind the radio auction is “because of the commitment of our lodge to the groups in St. Paul.”

“This is what we do. We give back to the community, and the Elks auction is very popular,” said Kryzanowski.

Turton said the group’s ability to keep giving back to the community is powered by the club's membership. He said they have 20 members right now, of which about eight are active.

“We need the help. We do try to make it a fun thing, not just work. We do go for supper once in a while as a group and we do have functions at the hall as a group. We’re just so stretched out. The big thing is that if we don’t get some more people in, there’s like $60,000 a year that won’t go to the community,” said Turton.

Anyone who wants to join or learn more about the group is invited to attend the Elks meeting, which takes place every second Wednesday at 7 p.m.
