The 10th anniversary weekend at B3 Motocross Park south of Spedden had an impressive turnout with 187 entries on both Aug. 17 and Aug. 18.

Park owner and event organizer Cory Goodon said he was pleased with the turnout, with participants traveling from all across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Western Canada to race.

“This race is all geared towards new riders and new kids. All about the kids really. There’s some people here that are pro riders now that started out as little guys and little girls on little bikes,” said Goodon.

In attendance was Elk Point's Dylan Ference, who is a pro class rider in the Alberta chapter of Motorcross Racing Canada. Ference finished seventh in the U25A and ninth in U18, despite having bike issue throughout the weekend.

One of the local kids who competed this weekend was eight-year-old Noah Gilmore. He said he’s been riding his dirtbike for five years now, but this was the first time he ever got to race it.

“It was awesome. I got to go really fast,” said Gilmore, who finished third overall in the PeeWee B category.

Gilmore’s father, Dan Hayter, said they decided to come out for the weekend after meeting Goodon, but his family has been involved in dirt biking his entire life.

“I got a brother racing, and my nephews are racing at nationals in Ontario this weekend. I was jealous so I took my son out here,” said Hayter.

He said the welcome they received at the park was great, and noted the race organizers had helped them to rebuild a carburetor when they had some issues with it.

Helping everyone out was a theme at the park. Nate Reszel ended up competing on a borrowed bike after he “blew the motor in practice.”

“I borrowed a bike from Tyler Chopyk. It was a pretty sweet bike. I got like fifth,” said Reszel.

He said his favourite part of racing is going fast and jumping the jumps.

“But it doesn’t matter if you win, all that matters is you’re having fun,” said Reszel. Reszel finished fourth overall in the 65cc B category and eighth overall in the 85cc B.

Goodon said he wanted to make a point of thanking the sponsors for the weekend, especially Honda Extreme and Xtreme Power Products in St. Paul. He said Honda sponsors the track and Xtreme had donated time and equipment to make the weekend of races possible.
