Brett Kissel was back in his old stomping grounds to perform at Flat Lake Community Hall on Friday and Saturday night, but in between entertaining his hometown fans, the singer was making big waves on the national scene with his latest country offering.

The singer, who is making the move to Nashville in the new year, came back to the area for his third annual I’ll be Home for Christmas concert, riding high from the success of his new song, Hockey, Please Come Back.

There may be other country songs bemoaning lost loves, but for Kissel, that heartfelt tune about lost love was the tongue-in-cheek lament about the loss of hockey following the NHL lockout, forcing Kissel to put up with watching his wife’s recorded episodes of Desperate Housewives.

In just four days of its release, the video gained 10,000 views and last week, the song ended up topping the charts as the most downloaded song on Canadian Country radio, even beating out country/pop superstar Taylor Swift, according to Kisssel’s special projects manager and wife, Cecilia.

Last Monday proved to be very busy for the local boy, as he debuted the video on CTV Morning Live, and held interviews with a Vancouver country music radio station, Primetime Sports with Bob McCowan and with one of his hockey idols, Kelly Hrudey of Hockey Night in Canada, on his nationwide radio program.
