Students from St. Paul Regional (pictured), FG Miller, and Glendon excelled at track and field zones, May 23 in Lloydminster.

It was a dominating performance for a trio of schools, with local athletes taking centre stage in Lloydminster on May 23 at track and field zones.

St. Paul Regional High School took home the overall points winner, as well as boys and girls and the 3A banner. Athletic director at Regional Hank Smid said this year is another in a long line of zones domination.

"It's always nice when you have a good athletes heading into the zones competition and knowing you can compete for the 3A championship, and we certainly did so. This is the sixteenth year in a row that we've won the zone championship. We kind of anticipate that (winning zones) will happen, but you never know what that competition is going to be like."

Despite the continued success, Smid says there aren't any feelings of complacency from each fresh group of athletes.

"There's a lot of good schools around, and we always remind the kids that (winning) isn't to be expected and we have to work for this. I think that message speaks well for the kids and they work hard for it."

A total of 21 students from Regional have advanced to provincials, June 1 and 2 in Red Deer.

Over in the 1A category, it was Glendon School that grabbed this year's banner, for the tenth time in the past 12 years. Track coach Daryn Galatiuk says although the track record is nearly perfect, there are no certainties each time out.

"I wasn't sure exactly what we were going to get this year. It's been kind of a strange year getting out for practices, and for getting kids out."

He added, "Ultimately at zones, we've had a few surprises and a few disappointments in some areas, but I think overall the coaches walked away and were happy with the performances that we got."

Half of the 20 students who represented Glendon at zones have moved on to provincials.

Galatiuk said he and the other coaches hope the 10 students' post personal bests at provincials, and the final standings will work themselves out.

"If they do their personal bests, then I can't complain as a coach."

The final two banners were won by FG Miller in 2A, and Lloydminster in 4A.

It was the second zone win in a row for FG Miller, which earned its first-ever zone banner in 2017, and a major improvement from five years ago, when coach Jonathan Randall took only three students to Lloydminster for a zone competition.

“We had some strong performances, from throwers, high jumpers and triple jumpers and long distance runners,” Randall said. The running prowess “comes from cross-country, last year we placed second in the province.”

Not only did they win the 2A banner but, “We were fourth overall as a school, and the boys finished third overall; that’s pretty impressive."

“A lot of our students are not dedicated to track,” Randall says. “They just do it to represent our school, and that pushes them to get even better. I’m proud of them, for sure.” He noted that some of the 2A schools they compete against have their own track, “and we practice in a dirt field.”
