Mallaig school closed while RCMP investigates threat

A potential threat made on social media towards Mallaig School saw RCMP respond on Sunday evening, with the school closed as a precautionary measure on Monday.

On March 5, at about 9:30 p.m., St. Paul RCMP were notified of the threat and responded to investigate these concerns.

The school was closed for the following day as a precaution until RCMP had further time to complete an investigation. St. Paul Education Regional Division distributed communication to parents of the school regarding the closure. At no time was any member of the public, school personnel or students at risk as the school was closed, and on Tuesday, the school reopened to staff and students.

Charges are currently pending against a youth for uttering threats and failing to comply with court conditions, in relation to this incident.

Mallaig School will be hosting a parent council meeting this evening, March 7, at 7 p.m. to discuss the events of the week and any concerns parents might have.

On March 5 at 1:45 p.m., Elk Point RCMP responded to an armed robbery at a gas station in Lindbergh.

Two males entered the business in disguise, demanded money and brandished what a witness believed to be a firearm. The two suspects fled the gas station in a vehicle with an undisclosed amount of money. No one was harmed.

The driver of the suspect vehicle is described as: Approximately 5’8”- 5’10” with a black hoodie with light coloured sleeves, blue jeans, and beige/white boots.

The second suspect is described as approximately 5’8”- 5’10” with a purple hoodie, purple sweat pants, and brown shoes.

The vehicle is described as a grey Chevrolet Cruze (2015 or newer, with dark tinted windows.

Elk Point RCMP made patrols in the area but were unable to locate the suspects. A short time later the same suspect vehicle was located driving in the Vermilion area by police. The suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and a pursuit was called off due to public safety.

At about 5 p.m. on Saturday, escaped inmate Douglas Bruno John was taken into custody in St. Paul, after a short pursuit in the stolen truck ended with police on Highway 29. No injuries were reported.

RCMP would like to thank the public for their assistance with this matter. Earlier in the day, Fort Saskatchewan RCMP responded to a report that John, a 20-year-old male, had escape custody of Correctional Services of Canada while attending Fort Saskatchewan Hospital.

He fled from the hospital and was able to steal an unoccupied truck that was left running at a nearby residence.
