Athletes from across the St. Paul Athletics Association (SPAA) gathered at the St. Paul Athletic Park to take part in this year’s senior high championship track meet on May 17.

In the end, it would be the area’s largest high school that would claim each of the three banners – St. Paul Regional High School. Banners are awarded in three categories: Combined Team Scores, Female Team Scores, Male Team Scores.

This year, a change was made to allow schools to enter up to three athletes in one category, as a way to encourage more participation from the area schools, explains Hank Smid, coach of the Regional High School track and field team.

While the change resulted in 66 Regional High School students competing, and an impressive 55 students moving on to zones this week, the overall number were a little low.

“We had the largest numbers we’ve ever had,” said Smid, when speaking about the participation from Regional students. He noted that that kids worked really hard, but also acknowledged that having a track in the school’s yard is a huge benefit.

“We’re very fortunate that we have a track in our back yard.”

With the wet spring experienced in the area, many other area athletes likely couldn’t get outside to practice, said Smid. In addition, there are a number of other sports that have been going on lately within the schools, such as badminton and handball.

While a long list of events took place on Wednesday, one specific track and field event was completed prior to the SPAA championship. A group of students from the area, including students from Regional High School, Glendon, and Bonnyville’s BCHS, have been travelling to Edmonton to train and compete in pole vault.

Glendon School has taken a lead on creating interest in the event, and students from all three schools will be represented at provincials. From Regional, Morgan Gerlinsky will compete in the junior girls category, and Dylan Amyotte will compete in the intermediate boys category.

From Glendon, an even longer list of athletes will be moving forward to provincials to compete in the pole vaults, including: Brett Foley in junior boys; Wyatt Doonanco and Carson Doonanco in senior boys; Brooke Skrypichayko in junior girls; Paxton Gamblinn and Karlee Voltner in intermediate girls; and Faith Janz and Sydney Theroux in senior girls.

For the rest of the qualifying athletes, track and field zones will be taking place this week, on May 24 at the St. Paul Athletic Park. From there, athletes will move on to compete at provincials in Edmonton on June 2 and 3.
