Recent drug analysis from an incident on April 24, 2018, has revealed the drugs seized by RCMP members during a proactive traffic stop are confirmed to be Carfentanyl.

"Carfentanyl is a highly potent and addictive synthetic opioid analgesic that is estimated to be up to 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Carfentanyl has legitimate medicinal uses as an anesthetic and for severe pain management, and is regulated under the Food and Drugs Act as well as under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act," according to a press release from RCMP.

The press release stated the dangers involved in taking the powerful drug.

"Domestically, illicit Carfentanyl can be found in powder or liquid form as well as pressed into tablets mimicking the appearance of known pharmaceuticals such as OxyContin. The effects of Carfentanyl are unpredictable.

Users have no idea of the level of purity or the potency of what they take. Carfentanyl is potentially lethal. Carfentanil is 100 times more potent than fentanyl; even the tiniest of particles could prove lethal."

Background

On April 24, St. Paul RCMP along with the Eastern Alberta Crime Reduction Unit (EADCRU) members were conducting patrols in Saddle Lake Cree Nation.

Police attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on a stolen truck. The vehicle stopped and a passenger jumped out and fled on foot. The passenger was quickly arrested and police seized several pills and over $2,100 in cash.

The truck was later found abandoned in a field south of Highway 652. The driver was located and arrested a short time later with the assistance of St. Paul Police Dog Services (PDS) and Traffic Service members.

Two men were charged as a result of the situation.
