Road conditions throughout the area are "horrible," according to St. Paul Fire Chief Trevor Kotowich, Friday morning.

"Travel is not recommended until crews have been out sanding. There is a multi-vehicle incident on Highway 28 that both St. Paul and Mallaig (fire departments) are at," confirmed Kotowich.

One motorist travelling west on Highway 28 reported being turned south on Highway 881 when they reached the intersection, as crews were out early directing traffic on Nov. 8 due to extremely icy conditions.

Interim CAO with the County of St. Paul Tim Mahdiuk confirmed that the municipality was out sanding roads, but "we are not recommending travel unless critical."

County of St. Paul public works superintendent Dan Reid noted that roads throughout the county were ice covered, and it was not contained to just one area.

Mallaig Fire Chief Raymond Brousseau also recommended people stay off the icy roads until further notice. He noted that Highway 28 would likely reopen soon, when speaking with the Journal just before 8:30 a.m.
