Tribal Chiefs Ventures Inc. recently released a revised statement in response to separation talks that have been taking place since the October federal election.

The following release was sent out, explaining the organization's stance:

"As Chiefs we were elected by the members of our respective Nations, together with our councillors, to provide peace, order and good government in our respective communities. This is a Treaty commitment with the Crown. The Crown is the head of state for Canada and Alberta as represented respectively by the Governor General, and Lieutenant Governor.

"The 3 Treaties Nos. 6, 7 and 8 were foundational to the establishment of Canada and the Province of Alberta. The Treaties are understood internationally as Peace and Friendship Treaties through which the territories were and continue to be shared and the rights established are protected.

Therefore, we are obliged to speak to any discussions elsewhere on 'separation' from the rest of Canada. As Treaty Peoples we are not prepared to step away from our sovereign relationship with the Crown and our responsibilities within the Treaty territories.

We urge all to consider the Treaty relationship with the Crown, the Crown’s place as Head of State, the shared territories and respective rights. We urge all to step back, reflect on consequences of separation and our responsibilities for future generations."

Tribal Chiefs Ventures Inc is a Tribal Council from Northeast Alberta, made up of representation from Beaver Lake Cree Nation, Cold Lake First Nations, Frog Lake First Nations, Heart Lake First Nation, Kehewin Cree Nation and Whitefish Lake First Nation No. 128.
